The exhibition brings together 39 major paintings by followers of the artist Lombard, chosen in consultation with the Special Division for the historical, artistic and ethno-anthropological and the Town Museum in Rome, including those owned by the FEC which, by their very nature, best represent the group of followers of ; Caravaggio.

Around the early seventeenth century the fame of the artist and his technique, already able to cross national boundaries, influenced many painters in the cities in which Caravaggio was the most active. If Rome and Naples are the most important centers that host signs of appreciable Caravaggio's style, equally significant evidence comes also asked the FEC present in the following provinces: Ancona, Bologna, Cosenza, Latina, Lucca, Urbino, Pesaro, Rieti, Siena, Siracusa. course you can not talk about Caravaggeschi without making specific reference to the works of the master who inspired them. The Fund for Religious Buildings, which includes in its important collection of works of art including seven paintings by Caravaggio, commemorates the parallel between the great artist and his followers by creating, through this exhibition, an ideal link with great Lombard artist exhibition staged at the Quirinal Stables, complementing and completing the outline of a period of fundamental interest in Italian painting. An interesting finding for four of the works exhibited in "The Colors of the Dark" was performed in preparation of the event: have been found on the back of the frames, the parchments which testify to the patronage of individual canvases .
During the period, and in the exhibition can also closely monitor a restoration work in progress. An extensive catalog (published by SKIRA) supports illustrating the preparation of the individual works on display through introductory essays, fact sheets and monographs accurate photographic reproductions.
